Tesla is preparing to roll out a major update to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, integrating features from its internal robotaxi program in Austin. The development marks a rare public update from CEO Elon Musk, who stated the change would deliver a significant improvement to the system.

The upcoming upgrade suggests Tesla is aligning its consumer FSD software with the more advanced platform used in its internal fleet. The move comes after several months of limited changes to FSD, with recent updates mostly focused on incremental refinements to version 13.

While Musk did not provide specific details or a timeline, the improvements are expected to be available primarily for Tesla vehicles equipped with the latest Hardware 4.0 (HW4/AI4). Owners of earlier hardware versions, such as AI3, have remained on FSD v12.6 since its release in December 2024.

There is still no confirmation on whether the forthcoming enhancements will extend to older hardware or when deployment will begin. Tesla may be targeting a release later this summer, pending internal testing to prevent system regressions.

The integration of robotaxi features could lead to better driving performance, improved decision-making in traffic, and increased reliability in complex environments, bringing the FSD system closer to full autonomy.

Tesla’s expansion of FSD capabilities remains limited to North America for now. Rollouts in Europe and China are subject to regulatory approval. The company continues to face stricter safety validation requirements in those regions, though efforts are ongoing to secure permissions.
