Tesla has granted a license to UK-based electronic connector manufacturer Volex to produce North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors. This decision follows a series of pivotal agreements between Tesla and other automakers that have propelled the adoption of NACS over the Combined Charging System (CCS) in North America.
Tesla’s decision to open up its charge port design to other players in the industry was met with initial silence. However, a turning point occurred when Ford CEO Jim Farley recognized Tesla’s supremacy in the EV charging sector and inked a deal to incorporate NACS into their upcoming electric vehicles. This move was quickly followed by General Motors, Rivian, Nissan, and other industry leaders, firmly establishing NACS as the preferred charging standard on the continent.
With this new development, Tesla has now enlisted Volex as a licensed partner to manufacture NACS connectors, often referred to as couplers. The announcement was made via a press release on the London Stock Exchange, where Volex highlighted its readiness to supply authentic NACS couplers to both automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and charging infrastructure suppliers.
“Volex plc (AIM: VLX), the specialized integrated manufacturer of critical power and data transmission products, is pleased to announce its partnership with Tesla for the North American Charging Standard (‘NACS’) EV Charging system. Volex has been selected as a global manufacturer of authentic NACS couplers and is fully equipped to immediately cater to the needs of automotive OEMs and charging infrastructure providers.”
