Tesla has recently issued a second recall for its Semi trucks. However, in a departure from the previous recall, which required physical service visits and parts replacement, this particular issue can be resolved through a simple over-the-air (OTA) software update.
Last November, Tesla delivered its first batch of Semi trucks to PepsiCo, marking a significant milestone after a three-year delay in production. As is often the case with new products, the Semi encountered some challenges, prompting a recall in March to replace parking brake valves in 35 Semis. Now, a few months later, a second recall has been announced, specifically addressing the door closure warning system.
According to the recall notice published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, the issue affects 36 Tesla Semi trucks manufactured between November 30, 2022, and March 15, 2023. Specifically, vehicles running on software version 2023.12.5.6 do not adequately alert the driver about an open side door. Tesla provided a detailed explanation of the problem in the recall notice.
“To comply with FMVSS 206, S4.1.2.3, side doors on the Semi require a door closure warning system. This system must activate a visual signal when the door latch system is not fully engaged while the vehicle’s ignition is active. However, the door closure warning system in the affected vehicles only activates when the parking brake is disengaged, regardless of the ignition status. Additionally, the operator of certain affected vehicles has the ability to dismiss the notification from the door closure warning system. As a result, these vehicles do not meet the requirements of FMVSS 206, S4.1.2.3.”
Tesla acknowledges that the ability to dismiss the notification may lead to a lack of driver awareness regarding an open side door, potentially increasing the risk of injury if the driver forgets about it. However, it’s worth noting that Tesla has not received any reports of accidents or injuries resulting from this issue.
The solution to this problem comes in the form of a software update, specifically version 2023.12.5.6 or any subsequent versions. Tesla initiated the deployment of this update on June 6, 2023. The software update introduces a “dedicated non-dismissible telltale” that will inform the driver when a side door remains open, ensuring enhanced safety and compliance with FMVSS 206, S4.1.2.3.
With this proactive response, Tesla is demonstrating its commitment to addressing any potential safety concerns promptly. By utilizing over-the-air software updates, the company can efficiently deliver necessary fixes and improvements to its fleet of vehicles without requiring customers to visit service centers. Tesla continues to prioritize the safety and satisfaction of its customers, striving for excellence in both its electric vehicles and their associated software systems.
