Tesla has integrated Chinese-developed artificial intelligence into its in-car voice assistant for customers in China, according to recently filed documentation, highlighting the automaker’s adaptation to local data laws.
The system now uses two large language models: Doubao, developed by ByteDance, for standard voice commands such as navigation and climate control; and DeepSeek Chat, a conversational AI from Beijing-based startup DeepQuest, for more advanced interactive dialogue.
Tesla said the integration ensures functionality while complying with Chinese cybersecurity and data localization regulations.
The automaker introduced a wake word feature for the system, with the default “Hey, Tesla” but allowing users to create their own. The move comes as Tesla faces restrictions preventing the use of its Grok AI assistant, which is currently rolling out in the United States.
Tesla said the integration is “designed to provide Chinese drivers with a seamless and interactive experience inside their vehicles.”
