J.D. Power recently released their third annual U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, which analyzed the satisfaction levels of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) owners with their Level 2 home charging solutions. Conducted in collaboration with PlugShare, the study surveyed 13,860 owners of 2017-2023 model year BEVs and PHEVs between December 2022 and February 2023 on eight different factors including fairness of retail price, cord length, size of charger, ease of winding/storing cable, cost of charging, charging speed, ease of use, and reliability.
Tesla came out on top for the third consecutive year, with a score of 790, which was slightly lower than their 2022 score of 797 but still significantly higher than the segment average of 740. The second-ranked home charger brand was GRIZZL-E with a score of 757, followed by Emporia with a score of 754.

At the bottom of the rankings were Ford (699), Electrify America (697), and Chevrolet (683).
One interesting finding from the study was that being able to schedule a charge time significantly increases satisfaction levels. Tesla’s success can be partly attributed to the ability to schedule a charge through the vehicle’s mobile app, which was rated higher (739) than scheduling through the charger mobile app (709). However, it is worth noting that 49% of owners reported that they do not schedule their charging sessions.

Overall, the study highlights the importance of home charging solutions in the EV ownership experience, and Tesla’s continued dominance in this area. As more and more consumers transition to EVs, home charging solutions will become increasingly important, and companies that can provide reliable, convenient, and user-friendly solutions will have a significant advantage.
