Tesla’s Cybertruck production team has reportedly experienced disruptions, with some workers placed on furlough in December 2024 due to declining demand for the electric pickup.
The temporary halt, which lasted only three days, followed a survey asking production staff about their preferences and informing them of the potential transition to the Model Y assembly line.
Sources close to the situation told Business Insider that Tesla plans to scale back Cybertruck production, which has faced challenges including inconsistent output and supply chain issues, particularly related to battery availability.
Despite the start of Cybertruck production in November 2023, reports of unsold vehicles piling up and extended delivery timelines have raised concerns about lower-than-expected demand.
To mitigate these issues, Tesla has reportedly shifted some Cybertruck staff to the Model Y production line. However, not enough workers volunteered for the transition, forcing some to make the move when the new schedule took effect in January 2025. Analysts suggest that Tesla may be prioritizing the ramp-up of the refreshed Model Y Juniper, which is expected to perform well in the market given the model’s established success.
As Tesla continues to manage production challenges, the future of the Cybertruck remains uncertain, with the company likely adjusting its plans to focus on more popular models like the Model Y.
