Tesla Inc is exploring the possibility of establishing an assembly facility close to the recently opened Felipe Angeles International Airport in Mexico City. The facility would serve as a hub for exports for the electric carmaker.
The potential plant would be located at an industrial park that is being developed in the vicinity of the airport, just 2 miles away. The announcement was made by Mexican Presidential spokesman Jesus Ramirez.
“Tesla is looking at investing in that area to take advantage of AIFA,” Ramirez told Reuters late on Monday, noting the site could serve as a base for the firm to export by air.

Ramirez recently spoke to El Heraldo de Mexico regarding the possibility of Tesla investing in the country. Although he failed to provide additional information, his remarks have sparked interest and speculation.
“Tesla will invest there … in an assembly plant, to export directly by air,” Ramirez told the newspaper.
Mexican authorities have reported that Elon Musk’s company, Tesla, has expressed interest in investing in the T-MexPark, a major industrial park located near Felipe Angeles airport in Nuevo Leon, a state bordering Texas.
A Mexican official confirmed to Reuters that Tesla has been shown the site, but has not given any official confirmation of its plans. When reached for comment, Tesla did not respond. According to reports, CEO Elon Musk is considering potential investments in the northern state of Nuevo Leon.
