Tesla has begun deploying its newest Full Self-Driving (FSD) version, v12.5.1.1, to a larger number of vehicles, though it remains limited to those equipped with the HW4 computer.
Over the weekend, FSD Supervised v12.5.1.1 was seen reaching more cars than the earlier v12.5.1 release, according to Not a Tesla App. Initially, Tesla’s focus for the FSD v12.5 rollout is on Model Y units with HW4, as CEO Elon Musk outlined a few weeks ago. Musk recently estimated that FSD v12.5 would start deploying to HW3-equipped cars in about 10 days, suggesting a rollout beginning Thursday this week.
Musk explained the delay in releasing the highly anticipated version to HW3 vehicles, stating, “It takes considerable software effort to optimize the code enough to run on HW3. It also needs to be validated separately.” He added that v12.5 has five times as many parameters as v12.4, necessitating additional work to adapt it for HW3 vehicles.
Cybertruck owners are also awaiting the FSD software. In an interview last weekend, Musk said he expected FSD v12.5 to be available for Cybertrucks in two to four weeks.
The new FSD version is anticipated to include several enhancements, such as combining the highway and city driving software stacks, allowing drivers to wear sunglasses during hands-free driving, and adding Tesla’s Actual Smart Summon feature.
Tesla Autopilot Director Ashok Elluswamy emphasized the focus on both smoothness and safety in FSD v12.5 development. In a recent statement on X, he noted, “One of my personal tests is to not spill an open cup of coffee while on FSD. 12.5 was the first version where I was able to do that for 30 min long drives.”
