Tesla’s Cybertruck is poised to embrace wireless inductive charging, as indicated by new connectors discovered on the electric pickup truck’s battery pack. This development marks a notable departure for the automaker, which had previously shown little interest in wireless charging technology for its electric vehicles.

While the convenience of wireless charging may not address a pressing issue, as plugging in a car is not particularly challenging or time-consuming, Tesla has previously discussed the concept in the context of preparing for self-driving capabilities. The notion was that if vehicles could autonomously navigate, it would be logical for them to also manage their own charging without human intervention.

Efficiency has been a historical concern with wireless charging, as it traditionally incurred greater energy loss compared to cable charging. However, newer solutions, such as magnetic resonance technology, claim efficiencies of around 95%, on par with cable charging.

Tesla’s approach has predominantly favored an automated robot arm over wireless charging for handling this task. However, recent developments suggest a shift in strategy.

Last year, Tesla teased a new wireless home charging station in a presentation, although the company did not provide further commentary. The image showcased a clear depiction of a wireless charging station, coinciding with Tesla briefly acquiring a wireless charging startup before subsequently divesting, albeit with some staff integration.

Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, has also confirmed the company’s work on a wireless charging pad.

While Tesla’s efforts in wireless charging station development are evident, compatible equipment is required on the electric vehicles to facilitate inductive charging.

Recent findings by enthusiasts at the Cybertruck Owners’ Club indicate that the Cybertruck is equipped with a connector labeled ‘Inductive Charger headers’ on its battery pack, as referenced in the service manual. This discovery suggests that Tesla could outfit the Cybertruck with an inductive charging pad when the wireless charging station becomes available.
