Tesla China has introduced a new retrofit option for Model Y owners, allowing them to enhance their vehicles with a multicolored ambient lighting system. Priced at RMB1,299 ($180), the upgrade includes both hardware and software components.
The retrofit, recently highlighted by members of the electric vehicle community on social media, adds LED ambient lights to the Model Y’s dashboard. These lights, which can be controlled through the vehicle’s infotainment system, offer up to 256 color options for the cabin.

The retrofit requires replacing the Model Y’s current wooden dashboard with a textile material dashboard, which was introduced last year as part of a minor update for the Giga Shanghai-made Model Y. This update also included a new LED light strip and new wheels.
The ambient lighting retrofit is available only for Model Y vehicles produced between January 24, 2022, and October 1, 2023. Owners interested in the upgrade should contact Tesla China to confirm vehicle compatibility and schedule a service appointment, which should be arranged at least five days in advance.
