Tesla has decided to cancel its Summer internships, adding to its recent wave of employee layoffs. The company’s broad restructuring efforts have affected employees across all levels, from executives to lower-level associates and service technicians, resulting in a reduction of approximately 14,000 workers.
The decision to cancel Summer internships has left college students who secured internships with Tesla in a difficult position. Several students who had received internship offers for the upcoming Summer reported that their offers were suddenly revoked.
One student from Miami University described receiving an email with flight information for the internship at 8:46 am, only to have the internship offer withdrawn by 11:25 am. Another student shared that her internship was canceled just three weeks before her scheduled start date.
The timing of these internship cancellations is particularly challenging, as colleges across the country are nearing the end of their Spring semesters. Typically, internships are secured in February, March, and April, and companies have already finalized their Summer internship teams.
The cancellation of these internships not only affects the students but also adds to the uncertainty surrounding Tesla’s workforce reductions. The company has been focused on cost-cutting measures in recent months, with CEO Elon Musk indicating that this focus will continue for the foreseeable future.
Tesla’s recent workforce reductions have impacted various departments, including the Supercharger team. Earlier this week, the company let go of several employees from the Supercharger team, including two high-ranking executives. Despite this, Musk reassured that Supercharger expansion will continue, albeit at a slower pace.
