India’s Ashok Leyland subsidiary, Switch Mobility, has launched two new low-floor electric buses—the EiV12 and E1—targeting domestic, European, and Gulf markets. The announcement underscores the company’s focus on sustainable urban transport solutions.
The EiV12, designed and engineered in India, is touted as the nation’s first low-floor electric bus with chassis-mounted, IP67-rated batteries. Depending on configuration, its batteries offer a storage capacity between 189 and 423 kWh, delivering a range of up to 314 km on a full charge via its CCS2 rear charging port. Built with accessibility in mind, the EiV12 features a kneeling and tilting mechanism, an automated wheelchair ramp, and designated seating for women. It can accommodate up to 39 passengers and offers five CCTV cameras for enhanced safety, alongside panoramic windows that maximize natural light.
The E1, engineered for European markets and virtually flagged off for Spain, is equipped with in-wheel motors and a 400 kWh NMC battery pack. Weighing 10,775 kg, it is marketed as Europe’s lightest widely available electric bus, up to two tonnes lighter than its competitors. The E1 can carry 28 seated passengers and up to 93 passengers in total, including standees. Designed for urban efficiency, it features three doors for easy access and a flat gangway for smooth movement inside the bus.
Switch Mobility’s CEO, Mahesh Babu, highlighted the company’s achievement in securing 1,800 orders for the EiV12, emphasizing its alignment with global efforts toward sustainable urban transport. “Our low-floor electric city bus, designed for optimal energy performance and accessibility, reflects the market’s confidence in Switch Mobility’s vision,” said Babu.
The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) Chennai has already ordered 500 units of the EiV12, signaling strong domestic demand. With the introduction of these buses, Switch Mobility continues to expand its footprint in the global electric vehicle market.
