Swiss automaker Softcar has revealed its new lightweight L7e electric car, designed with four seats, a unique feature in this vehicle class. Weighing just 640 kilograms, including its battery, the electric vehicle is expected to cover a range of 200 kilometers on a single charge. Priced from 23,000 euros, the Softcar targets urban mobility and sustainability.
Traditionally, the L7e class has been dominated by two-seater models, such as the Silence Nanocar 04 and the Ari Motors 902. The Softcar stands out by offering four seats while adhering to the category’s 90 kph speed limit. It is powered by an electric motor delivering 15 kW of continuous power and a peak power of 30 kW.
With an estimated consumption of 8 kWh per 100 kilometers, the car’s 15 kWh battery can achieve nearly 200 kilometers of range. Additionally, Softcar plans to offer a gas-powered range extender, doubling the range to 400 kilometers.
Built on an autonomous ‘skateboard’ platform, the Softcar uses recyclable, low-carbon composite materials for its body, which is designed to be easily replaceable. The car contains only 1,800 components, compared to the industry average of 45,000, reflecting its minimalistic and eco-conscious design.
Production is set to begin in 2025 in a micro-factory, with an annual target of 5,000 units. Softcar aims to break even at 2,000 units, promoting a localized, sustainable manufacturing model.
“Innovation is at the heart of our DNA: At Softcar, we believe the automotive industry needs a complete rethinking. Our vehicles are the result of rigorous eco-design, using recyclable materials and decentralized manufacturing,” said Jean-Luc Thuliez, CEO and founder of Softcar.
The company also plans to expand its offerings to include a van, convertible, and two-seater models based on the same chassis.
