In a bold move towards an electric future, Stellantis, the parent company of renowned automotive brands including Jeep, RAM, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, and Maserati, revealed its plans to introduce a new all-electric compact SUV by 2025. The automaker, committed to revolutionizing the industry, announced its investment of 160 million euros ($171.8 million) to establish the production of this groundbreaking EV at its Rennes plant in France.
To support the manufacturing of the new electric vehicle, Stellantis will allocate the funds to establish a state-of-the-art battery assembly workshop and a dedicated plastic injection molding facility, according to reliable sources cited in a recent Reuters report. These strategic investments will enable Stellantis to streamline the production process and ensure the highest quality standards for their upcoming electric SUV.
Stellantis is embarking on an ambitious journey to transform the landscape of passenger car sales in Europe by aiming for 100% electric vehicles by 2030, with a target of 50% in the United States. This revolutionary vision is part of the company’s comprehensive climate strategy, aptly named Dare Forward 2030. Stellantis plans to introduce an impressive lineup of over 75 new electric vehicles by the end of the decade, catering to a diverse range of vehicle segments.
To facilitate this electrification push, Stellantis has devised a strategic plan featuring four distinct electric vehicle platforms: STLA Small, Medium, Large, and Frame. The newly announced Stellantis electric SUV will be built on the STLA Medium platform, specifically designed for compact SUVs. With an estimated driving range of up to 440 miles, this cutting-edge platform promises exceptional performance and range capabilities. The first model set to roll off the production line in 2024 will be an electric version of the DS 4, reinforcing Stellantis’ commitment to electrification and innovation.
Known internally as codename CR3, the upcoming Stellantis electric SUV will supersede the current Citroen C5 Aircross, which currently offers plug-in hybrid, petrol, and diesel variants. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares confirmed that the new SUV will be 100% electric and clarified that there are no plans for alternative variants, emphasizing the company’s dedication to embracing electric mobility.
This exciting electric SUV is just one of many forthcoming electric vehicles from Stellantis. The company is set to launch a total of nine electric models in 2023 alone, underscoring its determination to lead the electrification revolution. North American consumers can anticipate the arrival of the 2025 RAM 1500 REV, RAM’s inaugural electric pickup truck, scheduled for release next year. Additionally, Jeep enthusiasts can expect to reserve their first electric vehicles, namely the Recon and Wagoneer S models, in the United States later this year.
Stellantis is also expanding its electric offerings with Chrysler’s debut electric car, designed to attract younger buyers and compete with prominent electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla. After experiencing notable success in Europe, with global electric vehicle sales increasing by an impressive 22% in the first quarter of 2023, Stellantis is primed to accelerate its North American electric vehicle strategy. The company’s CEO, Carlos Tavares, affirmed earlier this year that Stellantis possesses the cutting-edge technology, innovative products, abundant raw materials, and a comprehensive battery ecosystem necessary to propel its electrification efforts in North America to new heights.
