Stellantis is expanding its activities in high-voltage battery repurposing, also known as second-life batteries, as part of its commitment to a circular economy across resources, components, and materials.

One of the latest applications of this initiative is the AVATHOR ONE, an electric medical device designed for people using wheelchairs or with reduced mobility. The device exclusively uses Stellantis’ second-life batteries, repurposed through a supply agreement with local system integrator INTENT S.r.l. It aims to provide a new freedom of mobility in non-road contexts, combining technology, design, social responsibility, and sustainability.

The project is the result of a collaborative local ecosystem in Turin. Stellantis’ SUSTAINera unit supplies retired EV batteries, INTENT S.r.l. repurposes and integrates them with a battery management system, Avathor manufactures the mobility device, and Italdesign contributes design and product development expertise. AVATHOR ONE was launched in April and showcased at Expo 2025 Osaka in August, with plans to feature it at the upcoming Salone Auto Torino.

Stellantis SUSTAINera ensures that retired high-voltage batteries are rigorously tested and repurposed for non-automotive uses, extending their lifecycle, reducing waste, and minimizing environmental impact. Beyond AVATHOR, SUSTAINera collaborates with utility companies and battery integrators, including ENEL X, to create large-scale energy storage facilities. Projects such as ENEL X’s PIONEER at Rome Fiumicino Airport are designed to store renewable energy and reduce CO2 emissions by 16,000 tons over ten years.

SUSTAINera plans continued investment in second-life battery activities, which have shown strong growth over the last three years. These initiatives complement other circular economy practices, including remanufacturing, repairing, and recycling, providing comprehensive 360-degree solutions across the four pillars of Stellantis’ SUSTAINera strategy.
