Smart, the electric vehicle brand jointly owned by Mercedes-Benz and Geely, said it will debut the two-seat Smart #2 mini electric vehicle prototype concept at the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, ahead of a planned production launch later in the year.

The concept will be shown publicly at Auto China 2026, which runs from April 24 to May 3 in Beijing, Smart said over the weekend. The production version of the Smart #2 is scheduled to be launched within 2026, following its initial unveiling in September last year.

Smart said in September 2025 that the Smart #2 would serve as the successor to the original ForTwo city car, which helped establish the brand as a pioneer in compact urban mobility. The new model will be introduced in China, Europe and other overseas markets, with a broader rollout expected in the second half of 2026.

Designed by the Mercedes-Benz design team and built on Smart’s new ultra-compact vehicle architecture, the Smart #2 is currently in the final stages of design and development. Last month, the company released images of camouflaged test vehicles and said the model had begun global road testing.

The Smart #2 will expand the brand’s lineup, joining existing models such as the Smart #1, #3 and #5, as Smart continues to reposition itself as a premium electric brand focused on urban and compact mobility.

The Smart brand was launched in 1998 as Mercedes-Benz’s answer to congestion and emissions challenges in major cities. In January 2020, Mercedes-Benz and Geely established a new joint venture under the Smart name, headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang, to accelerate the brand’s transition to fully electric vehicles.

The original Smart ForTwo two-seater has sold more than 2 million units globally since its debut. As part of its broader brand activity, Smart also announced a limited-edition Smart #3 model in collaboration with American artist Keith Haring, priced at 184,900 yuan ($26,580), with only 99 units available in China. The standard Smart #3 starts at 164,900 yuan in the Chinese market.
