Siemens Launches Quieter e-Line OnBoard Series for Electric Bus Charging

Siemens has introduced the e-Line OnBoard series, a new and exceptionally quiet charging pantograph designed specifically for electric buses. The pantograph charger is capable of handling charging powers of up to 600 kW. It can be utilized for short-duration high-current occasional charging or for depot charging with lower currents.

The primary application of this system is expected to be outside the depot, where residents may be particularly sensitive to charging noise. Siemens claims that the new pantograph offers minimal noise generation during contact with the charging bonnet and when lowering onto the bus roof. This achievement is attributed to a special design and noise-absorbing coupling elements incorporated into the charging head. The manufacturer asserts that the device boasts the quietest contact build-up in its class, with a peak noise level of 54 dB at a distance of ten meters.

Although the current pantograph supports up to 600 kW, Siemens plans to develop the capability for transmitting even higher charging currents in the near future. The e-Line OnBoard series of pantographs weighs less than 90 kilograms, features a durable design, and offers an optional self-lowering function.

The charging pantograph has mechanical dimensions of 600 x 630 mm, ensuring compatibility with existing roof pantographs on buses. With the new Siemens charging pantograph, electric buses can continue to charge in the same relative position to the charging station, which means that existing markings do not necessarily need to be modified, according to Siemens.

Extensive tests and field trials have already been conducted, leading Siemens to assert that the pantograph is ready for mass production. It complies with EN 50696 standards in all aspects and can be used with currently available standard charging bonnets.
