Siemens and Freyr Battery Collaborate on Battery Production and Automation Solutions

Siemens and Freyr Battery, two major players in the industrial technology and sustainable energy fields, have joined forces to develop sustainable battery production. The partnership was announced at Hannover Messe and will see Siemens become Freyr’s preferred supplier of automation and digitalization technology. The aim of this collaboration is to design and operate Freyr’s planned gigafactories in Norway and the US using Siemens’ ‘Industrial Operations X’ portfolio, a suite of hardware and software solutions that combines operational technology (OT) with integrated information technology (IT).

The partnership will encompass the entire battery design and manufacturing process, including production design, product design, and the automation of the entire production process. More than 50 GWh of battery cells are set to be produced at the Giga Arctic in Norway and the Giga America in Georgia by 2025.

To demonstrate the benefits of their collaboration, Siemens and Nvidia have developed a showcase using digital twins of the Freyr factories. The custom Siemens application, based on the Nvidia Omniverse platform and created using Amazon’s AWS IoT TwinMaker service, will enable Freyr to make better and faster decisions, according to Siemens.

Earlier this year, Siemens and Freyr announced that they were forming a strategic coalition with Caterpillar, Glencore, and Nidec to help expand sustainable battery solutions in Europe, North America, and beyond.

“We are looking forward to leveraging Siemens’ world-leading automation and digitalization expertise coupled with the unique capabilities of AWS and NVIDIA in our battery design and manufacturing processes to meet the growing global battery demand,” said Tom Einar Jensen, co-founder and CEO of Freyr.

The cooperation between Siemens and Freyr is a significant step towards a more sustainable future, paving the way for more efficient and eco-friendly battery production processes. “Speed, scale, sustainability: That’s what battery manufacturers need. And this is what our customers get at Siemens better than anywhere else,” said Cedrik Neike, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and CEO of Digital Industries. “With this partnership, we underscore our position as a prime partner to battery manufacturers worldwide.
