Shell, one of the leading energy companies, has announced its ambitious plan to create a comprehensive network of fast and ultra-fast charging stations across motorways in Austria by 2025. This initiative aims to support the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and provide convenient charging options for EV owners throughout the country. As a first step towards this goal, Shell has already introduced high-power chargers at several key locations along Austrian motorways.
The inaugural covered charging stations have been inaugurated at strategic points including Walserberg, Ansfelden, St. Pƶlten, Strengberg, Mondsee, and FĆ¼rnitz. A press photo accompanying the announcement showcases a site featuring two ABB Terra 360 high-power charging (HPC) columns, each equipped with two CCS charging points.
While the exact number of locations and charging points for the comprehensive HPC network remains undisclosed, Hartwig Hufnagl, the board director of ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und SchnellstraĆen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft), expressed confidence in the development. Hufnagl stated, “ASFINAG guarantees a nationwide supply of charging stations at least every 25 kilometers by the year 2030. For this, we need our proven and existing partners like Shell.” This implies that Shell Recharge will collaborate with other partners in the expansion of the HPC infrastructure.
Saghi Froughivand, the head of Shell’s service station business in Austria, emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its customers. Froughivand said, “We understand that our customers have different requirements and desire the ability to charge their electric cars wherever they need to, be it at home, while shopping, or on the road at a filling station. We aim to provide the right solution for all these situations.”
Shell is also collaborating with Rewe, a prominent retail group, to install up to six High Power Chargers at 100 Billa, Billa-Plus, Penny, and BIPA locations across Austria. This partnership seeks to further enhance the charging infrastructure and ensure that EV owners have convenient access to reliable charging facilities.
Froughivand further explained the rationale behind Shell’s focus on motorway charging infrastructure, stating, “To facilitate long-distance travel with electric cars, it is crucial for us to offer fast, high-performance charging infrastructure along the motorways. By combining this infrastructure with shopping options and amenities such as the Shell CafĆ©, we aim to create a seamless and enjoyable experience for EV drivers.”
With its ambitious plans and strategic partnerships, Shell is set to play a pivotal role in the development of Austria’s EV charging infrastructure, supporting the country’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
