Shell Recharge has announced that it will cease offering its ‘Shell Sky’ software for third-party charging stations in the US and Canada by April 30, 2025. The cloud-based software, developed by Greenlots before its acquisition by Shell in 2019, was used by third-party providers to manage commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Shell Recharge will remove its branding and discontinue support for the software as it shifts its focus toward expanding its own public charging network in North America.
The company emphasized that existing customers using the Shell Sky software will have until the end of April to migrate their charging stations to alternative providers. While Shell has committed to supporting third-party stations until that date, the software will be fully switched off after April 30, 2025. Shell has recommended several third-party charge point management system (CPMS) providers and offered to facilitate introductions to these companies.
“Shell Recharge is focusing our investments where we have a competitive advantage,” the company said in an email to customers, explaining its decision to prioritize its own charging network. Shell’s global network currently includes over 70,000 charging stations.
For customers affected by the change, the transition will be made easier by Shell Sky’s compatibility with OCPP, an open protocol used for connecting and managing charging stations. This means that existing charging stations can be migrated to other OCPP-compliant software remotely or on-site. ChargeLab and Pulse Energy have already announced their support for Shell Sky customers seeking new charge management systems.
Shaun Stewart, President of ChargeLab, expressed appreciation for Shell’s timely notice, but noted the challenge of completing the migration process in a limited timeframe. “We applaud Shell’s decision to notify customers at least 90 days before turning off its software. At the same time, this remains a short window to complete the steps necessary to migrate to a new back-end,” he said.
In addition to discontinuing Shell Sky, Shell is restructuring its charging business, with Dutch company 50five taking over the responsibility for Shell Recharge Solutions’ home and workplace chargers in six markets, including Germany.
