Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer Scania is enhancing its electric bus platform with a more efficient e-machine, new battery configurations, and an upgraded rear charging interface to improve power uptake and operational efficiency.

Scania, a subsidiary of Volkswagen’s Traton Group, first introduced its electric bus platform at Busworld in October 2023. The platform initially offered battery options of 416 kWh and 520 kWh, with claimed ranges exceeding 400 km and 500 km under optimal conditions. With the latest updates, the company aims to provide increased performance, flexibility, and zero-emission transport solutions.

The newly introduced e-machine is available in four power levels—240 kW, 270 kW, 300 kW, and 330 kW—and is paired with a two- or four-speed gearbox to enhance energy efficiency, acceleration, and performance in demanding conditions. Scania is also adding a 312 kWh battery option, alongside a new rear charging port capable of delivering 325 kW with up to 500 A, significantly reducing charging times compared to the front charging port’s 130 kW limit.

“We know that bus operators face the push-pull effect of responding to emission regulations while striving to meet the specific demands of electric operations,” said Anna Ställberg, Head of Urban Solutions for People Transport Solutions at Scania Group. “The new e-machine, battery, and charging options have been developed with our customers’ challenges in mind and align with our sustainability goals.”

The e-machine integrates an electric motor, inverter, gearbox, and oil system into a compact drive unit. It complies with new cybersecurity regulations and features an advanced cooling and lubrication system to enhance performance and durability. The announcement follows Scania’s previous expansion in electric trucks, with the introduction of the EM C1-2 electric drive system in 2023.
