Swedish truck manufacturer Scania and battery producer Northvolt have announced the development of a new electric battery with a lifetime capacity equivalent to that of a truck. According to the companies, the lithium-ion cell has demonstrated the ability to power trucks for 1.5 million kilometers, which is equal to the expected lifespan of a Scania truck.
In a joint statement, the companies emphasized the importance of top-performing battery cells to enable the shift towards electric heavy transport. Scania CEO Christian Levin said that the future of heavy transport is electric, and the company needs high-quality battery cells to deliver on their brand promise to customers.
The battery cells are being produced at the Northvolt Ett gigafactory in northern Sweden, and the companies estimate that the carbon footprint of the cell at full serial production will be around one-third that of a comparative industry reference.
The breakthrough battery is expected to have a significant impact on the heavy transport sector, as it will enable longer distances to be covered by electric trucks, reducing the need for frequent charging. It also represents a major step forward in the transition towards sustainable transportation.
As the world moves towards a low-carbon future, the development of new technologies like this will be critical in achieving global emissions targets and reducing the impact of transportation on the environment. With this breakthrough battery, Scania and Northvolt are at the forefront of the electric transport revolution, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
