Samsung SDI is setting its sights on achieving an energy density of 900 watt hours per litre (Wh/L) with its solid-state batteries, with plans underway for mass production to commence in 2027. This announcement marks a significant step for the South Korean battery manufacturer, which has so far refrained from making definitive statements regarding series production readiness.
In a press release for InterBattery 2024, scheduled to begin on March 6 in Seoul, Samsung SDI explicitly refers to an “all solid-state battery,” distinguishing it from battery cells with semi-solid electrolytes, which are sometimes also referred to as solid-state batteries. While Samsung SDI initiated pilot production for solid-state cells a year ago, it had not previously outlined a timetable for mass production. The 2027 timeline represents the first concrete statement regarding mass production readiness.

However, in its InterBattery 2024 announcement, Samsung SDI only mentions the volumetric energy density of 900 Wh/L, omitting the gravimetric energy density that relates weight to energy content. The statement indicating that the energy density of the solid-state cell is 40 percent higher than that of Samsung SDI’s current prismatic cells in production also lacks specificity regarding whether this increase pertains to weight or volume.
Nonetheless, higher energy density can result in either longer range or smaller and more cost-effective batteries with equivalent range. Furthermore, solid-state cells are considerably safer, as they eliminate the need for highly flammable liquid electrolytes.

Samsung SDI expressed confidence in its ability to achieve the industry’s highest energy density in its all solid-state battery (ASB) product by leveraging its proprietary solid electrolyte and anode-less technologies, the latter of which facilitates higher cathode capacity.
The pilot plant at the Suwon Research Centre is presently producing prototype cells. According to Samsung SDI, its roadmap demonstrates that every aspect of its plan for mass-producing all solid-state batteries in 2027 is progressing smoothly, encompassing development, production line setup, project launch, and supply chain management.

In addition to showcasing its roadmap for solid-state battery mass production readiness, Samsung SDI will exhibit a range of battery technologies at the show, including faster charging and ultra-long-life batteries. Notably, a charging time of just nine minutes is projected for charging from eight to 80 percent, but this technology is not anticipated to be ready for series production until 2026. Batteries with a service life of 20 years are slated for introduction in 2029.
