Samsung and Stellantis open up opportunities to build electric vehicle battery factories in the US

Samsung SDI, a manufacturer of batteries and electronic materials from South Korea, has opened the opportunity to build an electric vehicle battery factory in the United States, as reported by Teslarati Monday (21/3/2022).

Speaking at the InterBattery 2022 exhibition in South Korea last weekend, Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho said the company could build an electric car battery factory in the US, depending on future demand.

“We are considering various ways to increase production capacity there as many auto companies have offered us partnerships,” said Choi.

Samsung SDI is the only major South Korean battery manufacturer that does not yet have production facilities in the United States.

However, the company announced in October 2021 that it would form a joint venture with carmaker Stellantis to produce electric car batteries for the North American market.

Currently, the company operates battery factories in Korea, Hungary, China and Malaysia. Samsung SDI plans to add a second factory in Hungary and increase production capacity in Malaysia.

Samsung SDI participated in the InterBattery 2022 exhibition from March 17 to March 19. During the event, Samsung SDI launched the PRiMX battery brand and discussed its future in the battery industry.

Apart from Stellantis, Samsung SDI cooperates with other car manufacturers, including Ford, Volkswagen, and BMW. At the Interbattery 2022 exhibition, the Korean battery supplier showcased its flagship Gen.5 battery in the BMW iX SUV and iX coupe.
