SAIC-MG has introduced a new electric SUV, the MG ES5, in China, which is set to replace the outgoing ZS EV in key export markets, including Europe, the UK, and Australia. Built on the same EV-dedicated platform as the MG4 hatchback, the MG ES5 features a larger footprint and a more streamlined design than its predecessor.
The MG ZS recently received a hybrid-only update for 2025, leaving behind the fully electric option. Instead of following a similar design route for the electric variant, SAIC-MG opted for the all-new ES5 model, which benefits from the latest in the company’s EV technology.
The ES5 showcases a modern, grille-less front design, reminiscent of the MG Cyberster roadster, and features sleeker, more aggressive LED headlights. While the side profile maintains a somewhat conventional look, the rear of the SUV stands out with full-width taillights, similar to the MG4.
At 4,476 mm (176.2 inches) in length, the MG ES5 is notably longer than the ZS EV, with much of the added length benefiting the extended 2,730 mm (107.5 inches) wheelbase. Inside, the SUV boasts a flat-bottom steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment touchscreen, and a floating center console, creating a tech-forward cabin environment.
The MG ES5 is built on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) and is powered by a single electric motor on the rear axle, delivering 168 hp (125 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. While future dual-motor variants have not been confirmed, this powertrain offers competitive performance for its class.
In China, the MG ES5 will come with three ultra-slim lithium iron phosphate battery options produced by the SAIC-CATL joint venture. The largest battery offers a capacity of 62.2 kWh and provides a maximum range of up to 525 km (326 miles) under China’s CLTC testing protocols.
The MG ES5 is expected to launch in export markets by 2025, where it will compete with subcompact electric SUVs such as the Kia EV4 and Peugeot E-2008, though its larger dimensions place it closer to the compact SUV segment.
