SAIC-GM-Wuling has unveiled a revamped version of its best-selling Hong Guang Mini EV, marking a significant departure from the model’s boxy design in favor of a more modern, rounded aesthetic. In addition, the new model introduces a five-door variant for improved practicality, reflecting the joint venture’s effort to stay competitive in China’s ultra-budget EV market.
Since its debut in 2020, the Hong Guang Mini EV family has sold more than 1.4 million units, dominating the affordable EV segment. However, increasing competition has led to a decline in sales over the past two years, prompting this comprehensive redesign. The new Mini EV borrows design elements from Wuling’s Bingo EV but retains its compact identity, featuring 13-inch wheels and a playful profile. The addition of a five-door variant complements the existing three-door model, both of which share identical front and rear designs.
The revamped Mini EV measures 3,256 mm in length, 1,510 mm in width, and 1,578 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,190 mm. Compared to the outgoing three-door-only version, the new model is 336 mm longer, offering an additional 250 mm between the axles. This extended wheelbase enhances cabin space, particularly for rear-seat passengers. Inside, the Mini EV features a redesigned dashboard with dual displays, physical climate control knobs, and a central gear selector.
While detailed specifications are pending, filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology indicate the vehicle retains its rear-mounted electric motor producing 40 hp (30 kW). Power will likely come from a lithium iron phosphate battery, with range figures expected to be similar to the current model’s maximum of 280 km (170 miles) on a 26 kWh battery pack.
Orders for the new Hong Guang Mini EV will open soon, with initial units already arriving at dealerships in China. Pricing details remain under wraps, but the cost is expected to stay close to the current model’s starting price of ¥32,800 ($4,500), maintaining its appeal as one of the most affordable EVs in the world.
