Safra, a manufacturer of buses and coaches, made an announcement at the UITP Summit 2023 in Barcelona. The company showcased its latest innovation, a hydrogen retrofitted coach, equipped with the H2-PACK retrofit kit. This groundbreaking kit transforms a conventional combustion-powered intercity coach into a zero-emission vehicle.

Safra took great pride in revealing that the H2-PACK retrofit kit was entirely designed and assembled in-house. The kit facilitates the conversion of the coach’s diesel engine into a hydrogen-electric powertrain. It incorporates a powerful 350 kW Dana electric motor, fueled by a 100 kW (70 kW effective) Plastic Omnium fuel cell. To ensure an impressive range of up to 500 km, the coach is equipped with six tanks capable of storing 35 kg of hydrogen. These tanks are securely integrated into a separate compartment, isolated from the passenger area, in compliance with vehicle size regulations.

The showcased vehicle was part of the Occitanie Region’s fleet in France, as Safra was entrusted with retrofitting 15 intercity coaches for the region.

Safra emphasized that the homologation phase for the H2-PACK is progressing smoothly. The company conducted extensive operational safety studies during the design phase, and it is committed to ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety for its customers. The completion of all safety tests, including passenger safety tests, is a crucial step towards approval. Once approval is granted, Safra will commence the hydrogen retrofitting process for the initial series of vehicles in an industrial setting.

In addition to the hydrogen retrofitted coach, Safra is meeting the increasing demand for hydrogen-based transportation solutions with its Hycity model—a full-hydrogen bus available in a 12-meter version, featuring a spacious flat floor. The company has received orders for approximately twenty Hycity buses and is actively expanding its production capabilities by enlarging its facilities and recruiting additional staff.

Safra’s participation at the UITP Summit 2023 signifies its commitment to sustainable mobility and underscores its position as an industry leader in providing innovative zero-emission transportation solutions.
