Royal Enfield has officially unveiled its new electric motorcycle sub-brand, Flying Flea, at the EICMA 2024 event, marking its entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market.
Staying true to its iconic retro-styling, the Flying Flea division will initially launch two electric motorcycles, the FF.C6 and FF.S6, continuing the company’s successful formula of blending modern technology with classic design.
The name “Flying Flea” is inspired by lightweight motorcycles used during World War II, often dropped behind enemy lines for military purposes. This hints at the brand’s aim to deliver agile, maneuverable bikes suited for urban and recreational use. The FF.C6, the first model to debut, will feature a cruiser-style design, while the FF.S6, set to launch in 2026, will be a scrambler-style bike.
Despite the historical naming and styling choices, Royal Enfield has made it clear that these new electric motorcycles will focus on a more approachable and spirited riding experience, rather than pushing the boundaries of performance seen in high-powered electric bikes.
Both the FF.C6 and FF.S6 are expected to share a unified platform with a mid-drive motor and belt-driven setup, similar to the company’s internal combustion engine (ICE) models. While these bikes are not expected to deliver high-performance figures, the FF.C6 will offer a forged aluminium frame and magnesium battery case to keep the weight low, enhancing maneuverability.
In terms of features, the FF.C6 will include tech-forward elements like wireless smartphone charging, keyless start with smartphone connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, keeping it in line with the modern expectations for electric vehicles. Despite these advancements, the Flying Flea motorcycles aim to maintain the lightweight and accessible nature that Royal Enfield’s traditional motorcycles are known for.
Electric motorcycles from Royal Enfield have long been speculated, with previous teasers hinting at the possibility of an electric version of the popular Himalayan adventure bike.
While the Flying Flea lineup is expected to remain focused on modern-retro designs for now, future models could potentially expand to other categories, such as sport touring or adventure bikes. However, with the initial launch, the Flying Flea brand looks set to carve out a unique space in the EV market with its blend of nostalgic styling and contemporary technology.
