German bicycle specialist, Rose Bikes, is once again pushing the boundaries of e-bike innovation with its latest release, the Backroad AL. As the gravel bike trend continues to gain momentum due to its practicality and adaptability, the Backroad AL offers a compelling mid-tier option in the market.
The Backroad AL comes in two variants, following the familiar configuration of other gravel e-bikes. However, what sets it apart is its more relaxed geometry, providing riders with a versatile platform suitable for both performance-oriented and commuting-focused riding. The aluminum frame is thoughtfully designed with multiple mounting points, enabling riders to effortlessly install various luggage accessories for both urban commuting and longer countryside excursions. Despite its feature-rich design, the entire bike remains impressively lightweight, weighing in at just 13.4 kilograms, with slight variations depending on the chosen size.
When it comes to performance, the Backroad AL doesn’t disappoint. The bike is powered by the new X35 motor from renowned German brand Mahle, featuring a rear hub setup that is not only compact but also remarkably lightweight. While it sacrifices some power output in exchange for reduced weight, the motor’s 40 Newton-meters of torque still offer ample support and maintain a natural pedal feel. Working in tandem with the smart motor is a 250-watt-hour battery pack, providing riders with a claimed range of up to 62 miles on a single charge under “ideal riding conditions.” However, real-world range hovers around 45 to 50 miles. To cater to those seeking extended journeys, Rose offers an optional 208-watt-hour range extender that conveniently fits into the bike’s bottle holder.
Switching between support modes is a breeze, thanks to the intuitive iWoc One button located on the top tube. This simple system allows riders to toggle between assist modes without requiring a display. For those seeking further customization, the Mahle App offers the flexibility to adjust individual settings as desired.
Rose Bikes caters to diverse preferences by offering the Backroad AL in two distinct variants, both sharing the same sturdy frame and powerful powertrain. The more affordable AL Plus Apex XPLR boasts a 12-speed drivetrain comprising parts from SRAM, retailing for 3,399 Euros (approximately $3,785 USD). On the other hand, the more premium AL Plus GRX RX810 features an 11-speed Shimano GRX drivetrain and retails for 3,499 Euros (approximately $3,896 USD). Both variants are available in eye-catching mint green or sand beige colorways.
