Roam, a developer of electric vehicles (EVs), has teamed up with Hitachi to expand the use of electric transportation in Africa, specifically in Kenya. Through this collaboration, Hitachi’s expertise in EVs and fleet electrification will be utilized to increase the number of electric motorcycles and e-buses in the country.
The partnership is made possible by The Earthshot Prize, which will also enable the exchange of international knowledge within the EV industry through its Fellowship Program.

Transportation accounts for approximately one-fifth of global emissions, making it a critical area to decarbonize. This is why Hitachi is working hard to develop solutions for decarbonizing the sector from road to rail, according to Chris Saul, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, Hitachi Europe Ltd, and Earthshot Prize Finalist Advisor for Roam. Roam shares Hitachi’s vision of achieving a net-zero society and is delighted to have their support to help make EVs more accessible and cost-efficient in Africa.
Roam has already introduced its flagship electric motorcycle, the Roam Air, and its first-ever electric mass transit bus, the Roam Rapid, in Kenya. The company is innovating clean energy technologies to support its customers, and by partnering with industry pioneers such as Hitachi, it aims to transform the way people move around the world.
The partnership with Hitachi is a step forward in Roam’s mission to spread the use of electric transportation in Africa, and it is hoped that it will contribute to reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
