Rivian has issued a recall covering 23 of its R1S and R1T vehicles due to a potential electrical fault that could cause sudden power loss, according to a notice from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The issue stems from an improperly grounded connection inside the High Voltage Distribution Boxes, which regulate electricity flow from the battery pack to the motors. A faulty ground could cause the system to shut down, resulting in a loss of drive power.

The affected vehicles were assembled between Sept. 25, 2024, and Feb. 19, 2025. Rivian determined that about a quarter of the recalled vehicles may carry the defect.

The automaker will inspect and repair the ground strap joint of the High Voltage Distribution Boxes, or replace the high-voltage battery pack if required, free of charge. Notification letters will be sent to owners by Oct. 3, though customers can also contact Rivian at 1-888-748-4621 and reference recall FSAM-1723.
