Rivian ntroduced a renewable energy matching program on Monday aimed at supporting climate-conscious consumers. The initiative, which runs through the end of the year, offers to power up to 10,000 miles of driving with 100 percent renewable energy for buyers who purchase a new or pre-owned R1T or R1S model.

The company will purchase 4.8 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy certificates (RECs) from U.S. wind and solar projects for each vehicle sold through December 31, 2024, according to details shared on Rivian’s website.

ā€œRenewable energy matching allows people and companies to support the creation of more renewable energy on the grid, with the end goal of powering all of our electricity consumption from cleaner and renewable sources,ā€ Rivian stated. ā€œA matching program is a commitment to measure or estimate electricity consumption, and ensure the amount of renewable energy we develop, source, or purchase, matches or exceeds the amount consumed over the same time period.ā€

The program also applies to existing owners already using 100 percent renewable energy for charging through networks like the Rivian Adventure Network.

In addition to unveiling this initiative, Rivian released its latest carbon footprint report, which indicated a 15 percent reduction in emissions for its updated R1 Generation 2 vehicle designs. The company plans to continue reporting on its carbon footprint progress and aims to halve the lifecycle carbon footprint of its vehicles by 2030.

Rivian has also made significant strides in production, gaining approval to expand its Normal, Illinois facility, and plans to ramp up production for its R2 lineup. Additionally, the company secured a $5 billion investment from Volkswagen earlier this year to collaborate on software development and potential EV manufacturing ventures.
