Rivian has commenced the distribution of free NACS adapters to its owners, a move aligned with its recent access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. While Rivian received official access to Tesla’s Supercharger network last month, non-Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) require an adapter to utilize it. Tesla’s plug is now referred to as NACS, following its decision to open its charge standard in 2022.
Although third-party adapters have been available, several automakers that have announced a switch to NACS have committed to sending adapters to their owners upon availability. The design of Rivian’s adapter was leaked in February, indicating its imminent release.
Currently, Ford and Rivian have access to the Supercharger network, with GM, Polestar, and Volvo slated to join this spring, followed by others later. While Tesla previously announced that GM would gain access in February, GM communications clarified that the adapters will be available “later this year,” refuting recent reports suggesting their immediate availability.
Ford became the first automaker to start sending out adapters in February, a move that resonates given Ford’s pioneering role in the industry’s adoption of NACS. However, Ford has experienced delays in the delivery of adapters, with delivery estimates being pushed back.
Now, Rivian is the second automaker to begin sending out adapters. Rivian owners have reportedly started receiving emails requesting their shipping addresses, with some forum users speculating that those with low Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) are likely high on the distribution list, while owners with higher VINs can expect their emails soon.
The email sent to Rivian owners reads:
“Hi there,
