Rivian made waves on Thursday by unveiling not just the highly anticipated R2 electric SUV but also surprising the audience with the release of the R3 and high-performance R3X electric crossover models.

The R2, finally revealed at Rivian’s Laguna showroom, is optimized for adventures and comes in a smaller, more affordable package than its predecessor, the R1. The essence of the Rivian brand is evident throughout the R2, which is built on a new, more efficient platform and offered in single, dual, and tri-motor configurations, all boasting over 300 miles of range.

Despite being 400mm shorter and lower than the R1S, the R2 maximizes space with an open-air design where the rear glass drops and folding first- and second-row seats, allowing for easy transportation of large items such as surfboards and kayaks.

Following the R2 reveal, Rivian introduced the R3, which shrinks the R2 into its take on a crossover. Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, had a Steve Jobs-like “one last moment,” revealing the high-performance R3X, which includes a wider wheel and tire setup, increased ground clearance, and a tri-motor configuration.

The R3X also features a rugged and playful interior, showcasing Rivian’s commitment to innovation and design. Deliveries of the R3 and R3X are set to begin after the R2 is launched in 2026, marking an exciting new chapter for Rivian and its lineup of electric vehicles.
