Rivian has delayed the launch of two of its most anticipated off-road and performance features, “Kick Turn” and “RAD Tuner,” for the 2026 R1T and R1S Quad models. Initially scheduled for a September rollout via an over-the-air (OTA) update, the features are now expected to arrive later this year, the company confirmed.
Both functions were first unveiled during the debut of Rivian’s updated 2026 R1 lineup earlier this summer. However, the October update window passed without their release. In a statement to The Drive, a Rivian spokesperson said the company needed additional time to ensure both technologies meet performance expectations. “We know many of you are eager to try out Kick Turn and RAD Tuner on the all-new Quad. These features are unlike anything on the road today, and we’re taking a little extra time to fine-tune their performance,” the spokesperson said. “That’s why we’re adjusting the launch for both features slightly from September, to now launching by the end of this year. We promise they’ll be worth the wait!”

The Kick Turn feature—exclusive to Rivian’s new quad-motor R1T and R1S—allows drivers to perform near 360-degree spins by rotating the left and right wheels in opposite directions, improving off-road maneuverability in confined spaces. It replaces the previously teased Tank Turn, which never reached production. This capability is powered by Rivian’s in-house electric motors, a key upgrade from the Bosch components used in the first-generation R1 vehicles.

The RAD Tuner, meanwhile, introduces a new level of driver customization. It enables users to adjust key vehicle dynamics, including acceleration response, regenerative braking, torque distribution, suspension settings, and traction control. The feature effectively allows drivers to craft their own driving modes—whether for road performance or rugged terrain. While Rivian has hinted that RAD Tuner could eventually expand to other trims, Kick Turn will remain exclusive to the Quad models.

Rivian has not announced a specific release date for the OTA update but indicated it should arrive before the end of the year. For owners eager to experiment with the brand’s latest performance tools, the delay may test patience—but the results, Rivian suggests, will justify the wait.
