Renault, through its mobility division Mobilize, has taken a significant stake in Free To X, a subsidiary of Italian motorway operator Autostrade per l’Italia, to accelerate the expansion of fast-charging infrastructure across Italy.
While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, Renault confirmed that the transaction awaits regulatory approval. Free To X currently operates 110 fast-charging locations primarily along Italy’s motorway network. Mobilize’s investment will focus on extending this network to urban and suburban areas, making electric mobility more accessible beyond major highways.
Gianluca De Ficchy, CEO of Mobilize, highlighted the partnership’s strategic importance in advancing sustainable mobility in Europe. “By collaborating with Free To X, we are not only enhancing Italy’s charging infrastructure but also aligning with our strategic ambitions to establish a robust fast-charging network across Europe, making electric mobility easier for all,” De Ficchy said in a statement.
Free To X CEO Giorgio Moroni underscored the role of the partnership in promoting low-emission transportation. “We are proud to join forces with Mobilize to provide fast and hyperfast charging solutions for travelers, boosting growth outside the motorway network,” Moroni said, adding that the collaboration positions Free To X as a key enabler in Italy’s transition to sustainable mobility.
This move aligns with Renault’s broader European strategy to enhance EV infrastructure as part of its push for low-emission transportation. The expansion of fast-charging stations beyond motorways could significantly improve EV accessibility for daily commuters and regional travelers, supporting Italy’s transition towards a greener future.
Further details on the timeline and specific locations for new charging stations are expected following regulatory approvals.
