Renault has announced plans to collaborate with a Chinese engineering company to develop future Twingo electric cars priced below 20,000 euros ($21,676), as part of its strategy to compete with Chinese automakers in the small and affordable electric vehicle segment.
The development of the new Twingo models is progressing rapidly, with Renault’s Ampere electric vehicles division spearheading the project. A spokesperson for the division stated, “Twingo’s development is moving forward quickly, as we plan to make the development in two years,” emphasizing the company’s commitment to advancing its electric vehicle lineup.

The collaboration with the Chinese engineering partner aims to accelerate the development process and reduce costs. While the styling and advanced engineering for the new Twingo models will be handled in France, production is slated to take place in Europe.
Renault’s decision to partner with a Chinese firm for the sub-20,000 euros Twingo electric cars is independent of its earlier discussions with German automaker Volkswagen to jointly develop an affordable electric version of the Twingo. This move underscores European automakers’ efforts to produce smaller electric vehicles priced competitively against Chinese brands like BYD.
