Renault plans to invest €600 million by 2030 to modernize its manufacturing facilities in Valladolid and Palencia, Spain. The investment will support production of five new models, including two electric vehicles, while a new battery assembly line will also be established at the Valladolid plant.
The investment forms part of Renault’s futuREady strategy and is supported by funding from the Renault Group as well as national and regional government programmes for industrial transformation and sustainable mobility.
Five New Models Planned
Renault Spain has not identified the five models that will be produced at the two plants. However, the announcement confirms that the programme includes two C-segment electric vehicles.
The plans correspond with reports from March that Renault intended to allocate three new models to the Palencia plant, including two fully electric vehicles and a range-extender model. Those reports identified the second-generation Scénic E-Tech Electric, an electric successor to the Rafale and a range-extender version of the Scénic as potential candidates, although Renault has not confirmed those model names in its latest announcement.
The Valladolid bodywork plant will also receive a new battery assembly line as part of the investment.
New 800-Volt EV Platform
The two new electric models will be based on Renault’s RGEV Medium 2.0 platform. The architecture uses an 800-volt electrical system and is designed for vehicles ranging from the B+ to D segments.
Renault said the platform is designed to support multiple body styles, including sedans, SUVs, vans and MPVs.
The manufacturer cites a potential WLTP range of up to 750 km for vehicles using the platform. Models equipped with a range extender could achieve up to 1,400 km, according to Renault, while the platform is also designed to support fast charging times of as little as 10 minutes.
Investment Supports Spanish Manufacturing
The €600 million investment combines Renault Group funding with national and regional subsidies supporting industrial transformation and sustainable mobility.
The Spanish government and the government of Castile and León are supporting the investment, which Renault said is intended to improve the competitiveness of its Valladolid and Palencia facilities and accelerate the adoption of new technologies.
The announcement follows the signing of a collective bargaining agreement extending through 2028. Renault said the agreement secures around 6,000 jobs at its Spanish sites.
Christian Stein, CEO of Renault Group Spain, said:
“Spain is a strategically important location for the Group, not only in terms of production and distribution but also because of the ecosystem surrounding our core business, which includes suppliers of components, energy, and mobility. In these turbulent times for the industry, the Renault Group is demonstrating its commitment to the Spanish plants and the continuity of our business activities—thanks to the expertise of our teams, the social agreement, and the support of the institutions. Our goal is to remain a leading manufacturer in Spain and at the European level.”
Renault Expands EV Production Beyond France
Renault’s electric vehicle production has historically been concentrated in France. The company began series production of the Zoe at Flins in 2012 before shifting much of its EV manufacturing activity to the ElectriCity industrial centre in northern France.
The Douai plant has produced the Mégane E-Tech since 2021 and has since added the Scénic E-Tech, Renault 5 E-Tech and Alpine A290. In Maubeuge, the electric Kangoo has been produced since 2011, while production of the Renault 4 E-Tech began in 2025.
Renault has also expanded electric vehicle manufacturing elsewhere in Europe. Production of the first Twingo Electric began in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, in 2020, with the new Twingo E-Tech Electric also scheduled for production there in 2026.
The planned Spanish investment will further expand Renault’s European EV manufacturing footprint, while adding battery assembly capabilities to its operations in Valladolid.
