In a bid to expand its electric vehicle lineup, Renault is contemplating a revival of its iconic Espace model, this time in a purely electric avatar with a retro design. The new electric Espace, if greenlit, would be based on the Ampr Medium platform (formerly CMF-EV), positioning it to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz and other seven-seater electric vehicles.
The original Renault Espace, introduced in 1984, revolutionized the European automotive landscape as the first large saloon with a ‘one-box’ design, essentially laying the groundwork for modern vans. The innovative seven-seat layout, with the ability to remove five seats individually, set a new standard for versatility with a boot space expandable to three cubic meters. However, the current Espace model, which is only available as a hybrid, deviates significantly from this concept, resembling more of an elongated version of the hybrid SUV Austral.
Olivier Brosse, Renault’s global head of the Ampr medium platform, hinted at the possibility of a rebirth for the groundbreaking Espace, stating, “Technically I think it is possible, but after that we would have to consider if an MPV would be accepted by European customers.” He acknowledged the technical challenges, especially regarding weight and the drive system, noting that once a car exceeds 2.0-2.2 tonnes, it becomes mandatory for it to be rear-driven. However, Brosse also highlighted the advantages of electric car platforms, which offer more freedom in design and internal packaging optimization.
Renault’s focus on reviving classic designs is evident in its recent electric car lineup, including plans for an electric Twingo and the Renault 5, both paying homage to their iconic predecessors. While there is no official timeline for the release of an electric Espace or detailed technical specifications, Renault’s CEO’s enthusiasm for reinventing classic designs suggests that other models could follow suit as the company expands its electric portfolio.
As Renault explores these ideas, there is keen interest in how consumers will respond to a modern take on the original Espace. With the electric vehicle market rapidly evolving, Renault’s potential entry into this segment could spark renewed interest in the iconic Espace, blending nostalgia with cutting-edge electric technology.
