Recreational Equipment Incorporated, widely known as REI, has long been a go-to destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a diverse range of gear and equipment. In addition to its extensive selection for outdoor adventurers, the company boasts its in-house bicycle brand, Co-op Cycles. Traditionally, Co-op Cycles has focused on commuter and utility bikes, both electric and non-electric. However, with the introduction of the Co-op Cycles DRT e3.1, the brand is making a notable entry into the realm of high-performance bicycles.
The DRT e3.1 represents Co-op Cycles’ inaugural venture into the world of electric mountain bikes (e-MTBs). Notably, this e-MTB is classified as a Class 1 electric bike, granting riders access to a wide range of trails. Essentially, wherever a standard mountain bike can traverse, the DRT e3.1 can follow suit.
At the heart of this e-MTB lies the formidable Bosch Performance Line CX mid-drive motor, delivering an impressive 85 Newton-meters of torque. This robust motor effortlessly conquers even the steepest inclines, offering natural pedal assistance thanks to its integrated torque sensor. While the DRT e3.1 has a top speed limit of 20 miles per hour, riders have the flexibility to exceed this threshold using their leg power.
In terms of battery technology, Co-op Cycles has opted for the Bosch Power Tube 625, one of Bosch’s highest-capacity batteries with a robust 625 watt-hour capacity. This substantial battery promises hours of uninterrupted riding pleasure, ensuring ample energy for the journey to the trails, an exhilarating adventure, and a safe return home. For added convenience, the battery can be easily removed from the frame for separate charging.
The e-MTB’s mountain biking prowess is evident through its Sram SX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain, enabling riders to select precise gear ratios for conquering technical climbs. The DRT e3.1 also boasts top-notch suspension components, courtesy of RockShox, featuring a Recon Silver RL fork with 140 millimeters of travel at the front and a Deluxe Select Plus RT shock at the rear. To ensure confident and reliable braking, Tektro four-piston hydraulic disc brakes are equipped.
For REI members, the DRT e3.1 will be available for purchase starting October 31, 2023, at a competitive price of $4,999 USD. This pricing positions it as an attractive option, especially when compared to similar bikes from other brands that often command prices exceeding $7,000. Furthermore, after its initial availability to REI members, the DRT e3.1 is anticipated to be accessible to non-members as well.
REI’s Co-op Cycles DRT e3.1 emerges as an exciting addition to the electric mountain bike landscape, offering a compelling blend of performance and affordability, while also upholding the brand’s commitment to outdoor enthusiasts.
