Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in Spain can now benefit from a new dynamic charging tariff, marking a first for the country, as Dutch company PowerGo rolls out market-linked pricing at over 50 charging locations. The system, which adjusts charging costs based on real-time electricity market conditions, is available exclusively to users of the PowerGo Charge app.

PowerGo’s pricing model ties directly to the European Power Exchange (EPEX), meaning prices fluctuate in response to electricity supply and demand. This setup allows EV users to access cheaper rates during off-peak hours or when renewable energy production is high. However, those using other payment methods or apps may incur additional transaction fees or higher kWh charges.

“With dynamic prices, we encourage EV drivers to charge when more renewable energy is available on the grid,” said Oscar Cardoner Campi, Business Development Director of PowerGo Spain. “This makes charging both cheaper and greener. By linking our prices to market conditions, we make smart charging more attractive for EV drivers and promote efficient energy use.”

PowerGo exclusively uses solar-generated electricity for its network, making the pricing particularly sensitive to weather conditions. The initiative aims to promote sustainable charging habits and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The company currently operates a growing number of high-capacity charging sites across Spain, including 320 kW chargers in Vic and a 120 kW unit in Palma. It plans to expand further with the installation of 24 fast chargers near Madrid and a total of 126 new charging points in the coming months.
