A new global survey suggests that politics is becoming a significant factor in electric vehicle (EV) purchasing decisions, with Tesla emerging as the most-avoided brand among drivers worldwide.

The Global EV Alliance surveyed over 26,000 EV owners across 30 countries and found that many respondents actively avoid certain brands or countries due to political considerations. Of those who reported avoiding specific brands, 41 percent cited Tesla, while 12 percent said they avoid vehicles produced in China. A smaller proportion, five percent, said they avoid US-built EVs altogether.

What brands/countries would you avoid for political reasons?

The survey did not specify the political issues driving Tesla avoidance, but the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, has been involved in multiple high-profile controversies, including social media disputes and public statements that have drawn criticism and calls for boycotts.

Some Tesla owners separate the car from the CEO, but others let Musk’s actions influence their purchasing decisions. “Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s extracurricular activities have reportedly cost the company more than a million sales,” the survey noted, highlighting the impact of public perception on brand preference.

Regional differences were also apparent. In markets such as the US, Germany, the UK, Australia, and Norway, more than 45 percent of respondents said they would avoid Tesla. In contrast, only 2 percent in India and 6 percent in Hungary expressed the same view.

China-built EVs also face varying acceptance rates, from 2 percent in Italy and Poland to 43 percent in Lithuania. Analysts suggest that in developing markets, the lower cost of Chinese EVs often outweighs political concerns, while in wealthier markets, country of origin can strongly influence buyer choices.

As EV adoption grows globally and consumers have more options, the survey indicates that brand image and origin are increasingly shaping purchasing decisions. For automakers, it underscores the importance of managing public perception alongside vehicle performance and range.
