Over 10,000 Electric Cars Registered in Norway in May, Led by Tesla Model Y

Electric car registrations in Norway experienced a moderate increase in May, following a slight decline in April. Over 10,000 new electric cars were registered during the month, with the Tesla Model Y emerging as the most popular model. Although May’s figure of 10,773 new electric cars surpassed April’s 7,471 registrations, it fell short of the over 16,800 registrations achieved in March, marking the end of the first quarter. However, when compared to May 2022, the current result represents growth, with 2,328 more electric cars hitting the road.

According to the Road Information Agency, a total of 13,342 new cars were registered in Norway in May, reflecting an increase of 15.4% compared to May 2022. Electric cars accounted for a significant portion of new registrations, comprising 80.7% of the total, compared to 73.2% in May 2022.

In March 2023, the share of electric cars was even higher at 86.8%. Notably, the registration of plug-in hybrids continues to decline in Norway. The number of new PHEV registrations dropped from 3,221 in May 2021 to 1,375 in May 2022, further decreasing to 703 this year, representing a market share of 5.3%. Full hybrids, petrol cars, and diesel vehicles have even smaller market shares, while fuel cell cars are not reported separately.

It’s important to approach the May figures with caution, as discrepancies in the data have been noted. The number of hybrids reported by the OFV (Norwegian Road Federation) does not match the total elsewhere. The 1,102 hybrids mentioned may be mild hybrids not classified as either pure internal combustion vehicles or “non-chargeable hybrids.” The individual model series provide a clearer picture of the market.

The Tesla Model Y dominated last month with 2,691 new registrations, followed by the VW ID.4 (738) and the BMW iX1 (594). Other noteworthy models include the Toyota RAV4 hybrid (580), the Volvo XC40 (539), the Skoda Enyaq (387), the Audi Qa e-tron (386), and the Ford Mustang Mach-E (372). Additionally, the VW ID. Buzz received 308 new registrations as a passenger car, along with 174 ID. Buzz Cargo registrations as light commercial vehicles, totaling 482 ID. Buzz vehicles.
