Opel has introduced a 22-kW onboard charger for its battery-electric Grandland lineup, making the SUV the first passenger car from the German automaker to offer this AC charging capability. Announced on November 3, the upgrade is available for the Grandland Electric, Grandland Electric Long Range and Grandland Electric AWD.
According to Opel, the higher-capacity onboard charger can reduce AC charging times by approximately half compared with an 11-kW charger, provided the vehicle is connected to a compatible charging point.
22-kW Charger Reduces AC Charging Times
The new onboard charger allows the electric Grandland models to use higher AC charging power at compatible home, workplace and public charging locations.
For the Grandland Electric and Grandland Electric AWD, which use a 78-kWh battery with 73 kWh of usable capacity, Opel estimates that charging time falls from approximately five hours at 11 kW to just over 2.5 hours at 22 kW.
The Grandland Electric Long Range has a larger battery with 96.9 kWh of usable capacity. Its estimated AC charging time decreases from approximately 6.5 hours to 3.25 hours with the higher-power charger.
Actual charging performance depends on several factors, including the charging station’s available power, ambient and battery temperatures, battery state of charge and condition, as well as vehicle equipment and settings.
Patrick Dinger, head of Opel Germany, said:
“As the first Opel passenger car to feature this charging option, the Grandland combines advanced charging technology with the qualities of a modern, all-electric SUV,”
Electric Range and All-Wheel-Drive Performance
Opel offers the electric Grandland with different battery and drivetrain configurations. The standard Grandland Electric has a WLTP-rated range of up to 519 km (322 miles), while the Long Range version can travel up to 691 km (429 miles) on a full charge.
The Grandland Electric AWD adds a dual-motor powertrain with a combined output of 239 kW (325 hp) and maximum torque of 509 Nm (375 lb-ft).
Drivers can select from Normal, Eco, Sport and 4WD driving modes. In 4WD mode, both electric motors operate continuously to distribute power across all four wheels.
The AWD version also features Frequency Selective Damping, a suspension technology included as standard across the electric Grandland variants.
Opel has presented the all-wheel-drive model at the Paris Motor Show and plans to display it at Auto Zürich.
Charging and Ownership Services in Germany
In Germany, private customers purchasing a battery-electric Opel from participating partners by December 31, 2026, are eligible for the company’s Electric All In services package.
The package includes a Free2Move charging pass and e-routes functions, alongside mobile charging and breakdown assistance for eight years or up to 160,000 km (approximately 99,400 miles).

Customers also receive battery warranty coverage guaranteeing at least 70% of the battery’s original capacity over the specified period.
The introduction of the 22-kW onboard charger adds another charging option to Opel’s electric SUV range, allowing the Grandland models to make greater use of higher-powered AC charging infrastructure.
