Three ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs will be installed in Northumberland by national charging network Be.EV, in partnership with development company Advance Northumberland. The initiative aims to improve EV infrastructure for residents and visitors while supporting the region’s efforts toward sustainability.
The hubs will be located at Tyne Valley Retail Park in Hexham, Ramparts Business Park in Berwick, and Manor Walks Shopping Centre in Cramlington. Positioned near key transport routes, they will provide charging options for travelers and those visiting nearby retail centers and attractions.
“These new hubs are a milestone in Northumberland’s journey toward a sustainable future,” said Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV. “By placing hubs in community-focused locations, we’re helping make EV charging accessible while supporting local businesses and travel.”
Each site will include a total of 18 ultra-rapid charging bays capable of delivering up to 125 miles of range in 20 minutes. The first hub at Tyne Valley Retail Park is scheduled to open in November, with the remaining locations to follow in early 2025.
Lee Farrier, Head of Commercial and Workspace at Advance Northumberland, said the project plays a key role in regional development: “This partnership is about preparing Northumberland for the future while providing benefits to communities. These hubs will support eco-tourism and low-carbon transport options in the region.”
Northumberland’s infrastructure for electric vehicles has expanded in recent years, with public EV charger numbers rising by 37% over the past year to 383 chargers. This aligns with broader efforts to meet national carbon neutrality goals by 2030.
The new hubs will be open to all EV drivers, with discounted rates available to Be.EV members. A portion of the revenue generated will be reinvested into the community through Advance Northumberland.
