In a groundbreaking partnership, electric bus and battery manufacturer Proterra, leading bus dealer ABC Companies, and California utility PG&E have unveiled the continent’s largest electric bus charging center in Newark, California, adjacent to Fremont. Spanning across a 3.5-acre campus, this privately-owned facility boasts an impressive array of 20 dual-cable EV chargers, each with a capacity to charge up to 40 electric coaches. A Proterra spokesperson revealed that the chargers are currently configured for 60 kW per dispenser, making them highly efficient and versatile.
The charging center not only serves as a crucial infrastructure hub but also offers comprehensive services, delivery, training, and support for Van Hool’s e-buses, which rely on Proterra’s cutting-edge batteries for power. ABC Companies, the parent company of Belgium-based Van Hool, has strategically positioned its e-buses at the Newark center, serving the transportation needs of Silicon Valley’s tech companies that operate employee commuter programs.
Roman Cornell, CEO of ABC Companies, highlighted the company’s commitment to fostering the rapid adoption of electric vehicles. As the largest passenger motorcoach and minibus dealer in North America, ABC Companies is taking an innovative approach by going beyond vehicle sales and support. The company’s investment in education, demonstration, and infrastructure aims to accelerate the widespread adoption of zero-emission commercial transportation.
Cornell proudly stated that, within just two years, over 20% of ABC Companies’ motorcoach sales have been attributed to battery-electric vehicles. This remarkable achievement has propelled the company to strategically invest in supporting the growing number of electric vehicles already in operation.
The opening of North America’s largest electric bus charging center marks a significant milestone in the region’s journey towards sustainable and environmentally-friendly transportation solutions. With the combined efforts of Proterra, ABC Companies, and PG&E, this state-of-the-art facility is set to play a pivotal role in driving the electrification of the transportation sector, further solidifying the commitment to a greener and cleaner future for all.
