Nio has announced the European expansion of its sub-brand Firefly, with the initial launch set for Norway and the Netherlands. The company will open its order books for these markets in the third quarter of this year, with the first deliveries expected in autumn 2025.

In Norway, the Firefly EV will debut with a starting price of 279,900 NOK, which is approximately $23,500 at the current exchange rate. The pricing for the Netherlands market has not yet been disclosed.

Firefly’s first electric vehicle was recently launched in China, where it is priced at the equivalent of €14,200. In China, customers have the option to rent the battery, a feature that may not be available in Europe, though this has not been confirmed by the company.

The Firefly EV is designed as a small, mass-market vehicle. It has a length of 4.0 meters, a width of 1.88 meters, and a height of 1.56 meters, with a wheelbase of 2.62 meters. The European model will be 10 cm wider than the Chinese version, which is 1.78 meters in width. Upon its release in Europe, the vehicle will compete with other small electric cars, including the Citroen e-C3, Renault 5 Electric, and VW ID.2all concept.

The car is powered by a 105 kW rear-wheel motor producing 200 Nm of torque, with a 42.1 kWh LFP battery from Sunwoda. It has a WLTP range of 330 kilometers (470 kilometers in urban areas) in Europe, compared to the 420 kilometers specified under the Chinese testing cycle. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and has a top speed of 150 km/h.

The Firefly is also equipped for fast charging, supporting up to 100 kW DC, which allows the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes. Additionally, it can charge using 7 kW or 11 kW AC. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality will be included, allowing the car to supply power to external devices.

The Firefly EV will be available in two equipment versions, Select and Comfort, and will offer a variety of customization options, including five two-tone color schemes and two interior themes (Obsidian and Travertine), resulting in 40 possible combinations. Sales will begin in Norway at Nio House in Oslo and Nio Space in Bergen later this year, with test drives starting this summer. The first deliveries are scheduled for the autumn. Further details for the Netherlands market are not yet available.
