Nio is set to launch its Banyan 3.1.0 system in January 2025, introducing new smart driving features powered by an end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI) large model architecture. According to a report by local media outlet AutoPix, the upcoming system will mark a significant step forward for the Chinese automaker, which currently offers eight models in China—ranging from the ES8 to the ET5 Touring—all based on the NT 2.0 technology platform.

The Banyan 3.1.0 system follows the earlier launch of Banyan 3.0.0, which focused on enhancing the smart cockpit, smart chassis, and incorporating AI technologies. “Nio’s smart driving team is expediting issues related to the end-to-end large model and plans to be ready for the January rollout,” AutoPix reported. However, Nio’s development has faced challenges, with the company recently conducting a review of its AI model in November and identifying several issues. Despite these setbacks, Nio remains committed to its ambitious plans to integrate advanced smart driving features into its vehicles.

Nio’s competitors, such as Xpeng and Li Auto, have already rolled out similar systems, with Li Auto releasing an OTA update in November that provides point-to-point autonomous driving for users. While Nio lags behind in terms of marketing visibility in the smart driving space, industry insiders suggest that the actual technical gap is relatively narrow.

In addition to autonomous driving, Nio is exploring more complex technologies, such as autonomous battery swapping in urban areas, which would require integration with its existing systems. Nio’s strategy differs from other automakers, as it is the only mainstream electric vehicle maker to adopt the battery swap model, adding another layer of complexity to its autonomous driving goals. As the company works to refine its end-to-end AI model, it aims to catch up with competitors like Tesla, which has made significant strides with its Full Self-Driving (FSD) V12 update released earlier this year.
