Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has delivered its 100,000th vehicle in Shanghai, the company said, marking a milestone in the city that hosts its global headquarters.
The announcement was made in a video message by founder and CEO William Li on Chinese social media platform Weibo, and was also shared through Nio’s mobile app. The company began deliveries in Shanghai in 2018 with the ES8 model.

In Shanghai’s car market for vehicles priced above 300,000 yuan ($41,140), Nio said it is the first domestic brand to reach 100,000 deliveries. The company added that so far in 2024, one in every two electric vehicles sold in this segment in the city was a Nio model.
Headquartered in Shanghai’s Jiading district, Nio has established a network of 10 car clubs and over 500 user communities in the city. By the end of March, its total deliveries across China reached 713,658 units, according to the company.

Shanghai offers free green license plates for electric vehicles, while combustion and hybrid vehicle registrations require a bidding process for blue plates, with prices reaching at least 94,100 yuan in the most recent auction. On Thursday, the city expanded eligibility for its car trade-in subsidy program—offering up to 15,000 yuan—to include vehicles registered outside Shanghai.
Nio has also built out its battery swapping infrastructure in the city, with 187 stations out of a national total of 3,259. The company said these facilities in Shanghai have provided more than 7.66 million battery swap services. In a February livestream, Nio executives said the swap stations in the city were close to profitability, with over 9,000 swaps occurring daily.

Earlier this month, Shen Fei, former head of Nio Power, was appointed president of Nio’s sub-brand Onvo. Oversight of the Nio Power unit has since transitioned to Nio’s Chief Financial Officer, Stanley Qu.
