Nio has celebrated the 10th anniversary of its research and development center in the United Kingdom, highlighting a decade of engineering collaboration as the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer continues to expand its global footprint.

The company marked the milestone with an event on June 18 in Witney, Oxfordshire, where it also officially opened a new engineering facility designed to strengthen its research and vehicle development capabilities.

Representatives from government bodies, industry partners, and media organizations attended the ceremony, which Nio described as an important step in the evolution of its international engineering network.

UK Center Plays Key Role in Global Development

Established in 2016, the UK research center was among Nio’s earliest overseas operations and has become a key component of the company’s global R&D system.

According to Nio, engineers based in the United Kingdom have contributed to multiple vehicle programs and technology initiatives across its product portfolio.

The center has supported projects ranging from the EP9 electric supercar to the ET9 executive electric sedan, with teams involved in areas including vehicle engineering, chassis tuning, dynamics development, and simulation technologies.

The facility has also developed expertise in European vehicle homologation and cross-border engineering collaboration.

New Facility Expands Engineering Capabilities

Nio said the newly inaugurated engineering center will enhance its ability to conduct vehicle development, testing, and technology validation activities.

The company expects the facility to support future product programs while strengthening collaboration between engineering teams across different regions.

The investment reflects Nio’s continued commitment to maintaining a global research network despite broader efforts to improve operational efficiency.

Overseas Expansion Continues

The anniversary comes as Nio continues to refine its international expansion strategy.

Earlier this year, the company adjusted its European operating model, shifting from direct sales toward partnerships with local distributors in several markets, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Norway remains an exception, with Nio continuing to operate a direct-sales model due to the country’s high electric vehicle adoption rates.

The company has described the transition as part of a broader asset-light strategy aimed at reducing costs while maintaining market presence.

Europe Remains a Strategic Market

Nio has continued to expand its retail footprint across Europe through local partnerships.

Earlier this month, the company opened its first Nio House in Greece in cooperation with local mobility partner Motodynamics.

The move further extends Nio’s presence in Southern Europe while limiting capital-intensive investments.

Meanwhile, Firefly, Nio’s compact electric vehicle brand, is preparing for further international expansion.

The brand is expected to enter the UK market in 2026 and has already launched in Singapore and Thailand. Firefly vehicles are also being showcased at the ongoing Hong Kong Auto Show.

Focus on Global Innovation

Nio said it plans to deepen cooperation with companies, universities, and research institutions across the UK and Europe as part of its long-term globalization strategy.

The company intends to continue expanding its international research capabilities while leveraging expertise from multiple markets to support future vehicle and technology development.

As competition intensifies in the global electric vehicle sector, Nio is positioning its overseas engineering network as a key component of its efforts to develop next-generation smart mobility technologies and accelerate international growth.
